DOUGLASSVILLE, Pa. – After a two-and-a-half month layoff, Coppin State's bowling team returned to action and earned a victory over nationally-ranked Wilmington while finishing eighth at the Bowl for the Kure Tournament, hosted by Molloy College at Jay Lanes over the weekend.
The Eagles went 3-2 on Saturday in traditional matches with a win over the 24
th-ranked Wildcats and two wins over Bloomfield College. CSU tied Wilmington, 869-869 which forced a five-frame roll-off where the Eagles were victorious, 104-76. The roll-off started with strikes from junior
Jazzleen McRae and sophomore
Kaylah Castillo for a double.
Mya Hamlett then went 9-open, but freshman
Raja Anderson came back with a strike, followed by
Nia Turner's strike in the tenth frame.
Anderson led the Eagles, taking 25
th of 60 bowlers with a five-match average of 182.60. This included rolls of 214 and 205 in Coppin's traditional match victories over Bloomfield.
McRae finished just behind Anderson in the individual standings, taking 29
th with a 174.00 average. McRae's high match of 191 came in a loss to the host Lions.
Turner and Hamlett took 42
nd and 43
rd, respectively, with four-match averages of 166.75 and 163.25. Both Turner (189) and Hamlett's (180) high score came in a victory over the 24
th-ranked Wildcats.
Aushia McLean also bowled in four matches while averaging a 158.50, with a high of 183 in Coppin's first match against Bloomfield.
In three matches on Saturday, Castillo rolled a 171.67 average, closing out the final day with a 199 against Bloomfield.
The Eagles went 2-3 in Baker matches on Sunday with victories over Felician and Mercyhurst. CSU dropped matches to Mount St. Mary's, Chestnut Hill and Adelphi. Turner paved the way for Coppin during Baker play as she converted on 100% of her single-pin conversions, going 15-of-15.
CSU is back in action on February 14-16 at the James Brown Invitational, held at AMF Towson.
