Men’s Track Takes Fifth Place at Season Opening HBCU Battle

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Coppin State's men's track & field team opened its season at the HBCU Battle and got individual victories from Aaron Lewis and Theodore Westcarr on Friday afternoon at The Armory.  The Eagles finished fifth of 13 schools on the day.
 
Lewis took the 60m hurdles crown in 7.88 after running the second-fastest time in the preliminaries with an 8.00.
 
Westcarr won the 200m dash in a personal-record 21.63 and also placed second in the 60m dash with a 6.85, which was also a personal-best.  Westcarr bested teammate Joseph Manu who took third in 6.86.
 
Joseph Amoah was the top collegiate finisher in the 400m dash (48.24) which was second overall while Michael Scott and Balvin Richards earned the silver in the long jump and shot put, respectively.  Scott's opening attempt traveled 6.81m (22-4.25) which was his farthest of the meet.  Richards' fourth toss of 15.15m (49-8.50) gave him a third place finish.
 
Also scoring points in their individual events were Malik John in the 400m dash (7th, 51.31) Yamoussa Sylla in the triple jump (7th, 42-11.50) and Jona Hanson in the shot put (8th, 43-3.25).
 
Coppin's 4x400m Relay finished fifth in a time of 3:26.27.
 
The Eagles return to action on Saturday, January 18 at the Maryland Invitational held at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Md.
