UMBC Takes Two from Softball on Wednesday

CATONSVILLE, Md. – Coppin State's softball team dropped a pair of games at UMBC on Tuesday afternoon at UMBC Softball Stadium.  The Retrievers defeated the Eagles, 5-2 in game one before taking the nightcap, 11-3.

How it Happened (Game 1)
  • Both teams failed to score in the first two innings as Coppin's Madison Didion and UMBC's Courtney Coppersmith were engaged in a pitcher's duel.
  • Coppin drew first blood with a run in the first as a throwing error allowed Alexis Genovese to score, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.  Genovese was hit by a pitch to start the frame before stealing second and getting to third on a groundout.
  • UMBC tied the score in its half of the third but Copping retook the lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Cayla Brown which allowed Genovese to score once again.
  • The Retrievers erupted for four runs on six hits in their half of the frame.
  • CSU put two runners on in the sixth but failed to capitalize and went down in order in the seventh.

How it Happened (Game 2)
  • Coppin once again took an early lead as Melanie Aguilera hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the first inning which scored Patricia Soria.  Soria led off the game with a single and got to third after Cloe Ochoa walked and Cayla Brown laid down a sac bunt.
  • Brissa Alvarado tossed a 1-2-3 first inning but was stranded after doubling in the second inning.
  • UMBC took advantage of an error to score a run in the second to tie the score and it remained a tied game until the fourth when the Retrievers got a solo home run.
  • Brown gave the Eagles back the lead at 3-2 with a two-run home run in the fifth but UMBC retook the lead at 4-3 with two runs in the fifth.
  • The Retrievers put the game out of reach with seven runs on eight hits in the bottom of the sixth.
Inside the Numbers (Game 2)
  • Coppin's seven base hits came by seven different players while Cayla Brown, Cloe Ochoa and Brissa Alvarado also drew walks to reach safely twice.
  • Alvarado allowed just one run over 3.1 innings and got the no-decision.  Lexi Flom took the loss, allowing two runs over 1.2 innings.  Madison Didion was brought in to possibly stop the bleeding but allowed five runs while recording one out.  Maren Bernal allowed two runs on three hits.

Coppin opens MEAC play with a 1 pm doubleheader at Delaware State on Saturday, March 23, followed by a 12 pm single game on Sunday.
