Balvin Richards tosses shot put at 2018 MEAC Championship

Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season at Maryland Invitational Over Weekend

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Coppin State men's & women's track & field teams got their outdoor seasons underway at the Maryland Invitational on Saturday afternoon. 
 
On the men's side, Michael Scott won the long jump in his Coppin debut, leaping 22' 5.0".  Elijah Noel also took fifth in the event at 20' 5.25."
 
In the 400m hurdles, the Eagles took second and third overall as Cheyenne Johnson earned the silver (55.36).  The bronze went to Aaron Lewis, who clocked a 58.08.
 
Also medaling in their individual events was Abayie Opuni in the 400m dash (50.54) and Balvin Richards in both the shot put (42' 9.0") and discus (143' 11.0").
 
Opuni and Johnson also ran legs of the 4x400m Relay that took second in 3:21.74.  They teamed with Joseph Manu and Anija Addison.
 
Addison also ran the 1500m earlier in the day and covered the distance in 4:13.36.
 
On the women's side, Randi Bohler had the top place finish, taking second in the 100m hurdles in 14.98.
 
Also medaling was Alanna Newby, who took third in the discus (123' 11.0") and Erykah Jerome, the bronze medal finisher in the 400m dash (58.66). Newby also took fourth in the shot put (40' 6.0") while fellow thrower Ariyana Larkins took fifth in the shot put (37' 1.0") and seventh in the discus (99' 9.0").
 
Three Eagles followed Jerome closely in the 400m dash. Cathryn Lane took fourth (59.33), Janee Quailes fifth (1:00.04) and Ivonna Hoskins (1:01.50).
 
Lane, Quailes, Hoskins and Tatiana Ogundeko teamed to finish second in the 4x400m Relay in 3:59.70. Ogundeko also earned a fourth place finish in the 1,500m in 4:51.36.
 
Elsewhere on the track, Hoskins took sixth in the 200m dash (26.06) while Aaliyah Williams clocked a 12.96 in the 100m dash to finish 10th.

The Eagles are set to return to the track on March 22-23 at the VCU Rams Invite.
