GLEN BURNIE, Md. – Coppin State's bowling team finished sixth of 11 teams at MEAC Meet #1 this weekend at Bowl America. Individually,
Kaylah Castillo led the Eagles, finishing 40
th overall with 922 total pins in five games but her 184.40 average was 22
nd out of 68 bowlers.
The Eagles got the weekend started on Friday with Baker matches where they finished 2-2 with victories over Florida A&M, 829-807, and Bethune-Cookman, 800-67. CSU suffered disappointing losses to Alabama-Birmingham, 957-850, and Morgan State, 869-820.
Five traditional matches took place on Saturday and Coppin got it started with a huge victory over 15
th-ranked Delaware State, 943-908. After falling to No. 8 North Carolina A&T, 946-758, Coppin bounced back in a huge way, blowing out Norfolk State, 998-749. The Eagles were then edged by Howard, 891-879 before falling to 7
th-ranked Maryland Eastern Shore, 1,089-812.
Prior to the start of bracket play on Sunday, all 11 teams played one more traditional match and CSU fell to No. 25 Monmouth, 973-822.
After seniors from all teams were recognized, bracket play got started and Coppin earned the 8
th-seed and fifth-seeded UAB in five games. After falling in the first game of the Best-of-7, CSU won four-straight to advance to the fifth-place game where they were defeated by Florida A&M.
Castillo got the tournament started with a 213 in Coppin's upset victory over the nationally-ranked Hornets and she followed that up with a 182 vs. the Aggies, 184 against the Spartans and 188 vs. the Bison. She closed out traditional play with a 155 against the Hawks.
Nia Turner had her best meet of the season, averaging a 177.40 in five matches which included a 211 against Howard. The senior also rolled a 182 against UMES to lead the Eagles.
Third in average for CSU was freshman
Raja Anderson who led the Navy & Gold with a 214 in the victory over the Hornets. She followed that up with a 176 in back-to-back matches against North Carolina A&T and Norfolk State and averaged a 176.80.
Jazzleen McRae and
Mya Hamlett were the lone Eagles to compete in all six matches, averaging a 174.67 and 164.83, respectively. The duo both rolled a 234 in Coppin's win over Norfolk. McRae also rolled a 183 while Hamlett a 178 against Delaware State.
Aushia McLean tallied a 171 against UMES and a team-high 184 against Monmouth and averaged a 160.67 in three matches.
CSU closes out the fall season on November 15-17 at North Carolina A&T's Vern Stallings Aggie Invitational held at AMF All-Star Lanes in Greensboro, N.C.
