- Chance Graham has been showing up on the national radar, placing inside the nation's top-25 in double-doubles (3), blocked shots per game (2.50), rebounds per game (12), and minutes per game (38.96).
- Graham has been the Eagles brightest star in the early going, pacing the team in points per game (14.8), rebounds (48), blocks (10) and steals (9).
- Brooke Fields has made her way onto the MEAC leader boards, landing at 10th and 11th in assists per game (2.8) and free throw percentage (69.2%), respectively.
Scouting the Marshall Thundering Herd
- Marshall has had a similarly rough start to 2018-19, dropping four of its first five games, with its lone win coming against Division II Bluefield State College.
- The Herd thrive on forcing turnovers and blocking shots, as it leads Conference USA in blocked shots per game (4.4), steals per game (11.6), turnovers forced per game (21.20), and turnover margin (+5).
- MU's main blocking threat is 5-10 junior Khadaijia Brooks, averages 1.20 rejections a game, which leads the squad and is fourth best in the conference.
- Senior Shayna Gore is as close to automatic as it gets from the free-throw line, as she has converted on 18 of her 19 attempts so far (94.7%), 16th best in the NCAA.
- Gore is the Thundering Herd's offensive catalyst, pacing the team in points per game (16.2) and three-pointers (13), while dishing out a second-best 11 assists.
Scouting the Virginia Cavaliers
- Virginia comes into Sunday's matchup winning two games opposed to dropping four. Its wins came against future Coppin opponent Old Dominion and MEAC South competition North Carolina A&T
- The Hoos have made its biggest impact shooting the long ball and denying shot attempts, falling within the country's top-50 in blocked shots per contest (4.5) and three-point field goal percentage (37.2%).
- UVA's blocking prowess stems from its 6-9 center, Felicia Aiyeotan from Lagos, Nigeria. She currently has 13 blocks, third-best amongst her ACC peers.
- The one constant presence on the court is Dominique Toussaint, as she's the only Cavalier player who averages more than 30 minutes, contributing a team-high 12.3 points per game and 3.8 assists per game.
- The Wahoos' deep-ball threat comes in the form of freshman guard Erica Martinsen, who buries 38.7% of her triples and makes approximately two per contest.
News and Notes:
Take A Chance On Me
In just two seasons plus four games, junior forward
Chance Graham already ranks 14th on Coppin State's career rebounding list with 605. Graham is well on pace to shatter Rene' Doctor's ('95) career record of 908 rebounds. In just 62 games, Graham has averaged 9.7 rebounds per game. A Second team All-MEAC selection last year, Graham led the conference with 10.7 rebounds per game and her 309 rebounds were the second most in Coppin single-season history.
Coppin State All-Time Rebounds Leaderboard
1. Rene' Doctor (908)
2. Kiesha Brooks (865)
3. Larrisa Carter (826)
4. Yvette Larkins (757)
5. Bridgid Mitchell (728)
13. Tonya Reed (619)
14. Chance Graham (605)
Having A Fields Day
New to the squad this season is senior
Brooke Fields, a former standout at Division II Roberts Wesleyan College. In three seasons with the Redhawks, Fields scored 1,226 points with a career-high 33 points in a victory over Bridgeport. Two seasons ago, Fields earned All-ECC honors with 15.6 points per game along with an 83% free throw percentage.
Staying In The DMV
Senior transfer
Kaiya Coleman was a near double-digit scorer two years ago at Division II University of the District of Columbia. She also has connections with head men's basketball coach
Juan Dixon, as she played under his tutelage in both individuals' lone season with the Firebirds, going 3-25.
Welcome Back
Coppin welcomes back sophomore
Maraiyah Smith after she had a standout freshman season a year ago. Smith averaged nearly nine points per game and ten points in conference play.
What's In A Name?
Along with Graham and Smith,
Oluwadamilola Oloyede returns to the fold for the Navy and Gold. While all the vowels in her name might make one lose their breath after one roll call, she prefers to go by "Dami" to make it easier on her peers. Oloyede had her bright spots in 2017-18, putting up 17 points while making all seven of her shots at Charlotte to go with three double-doubles.
Hawaii 2-5
Charlottesville native
Adrienne Darden has made her way back to the east coast after seeing limited playing time at University of Hawaii two seasons ago. The junior boasts a career-high of seven points versus Boise State and brings a vertical element to the club that was lacking in depth.
Freshman Takeover
To coincide with the Eagles' three transfers Darden, Fields, and Coleman, CSU welcomes a plethora of first year players into the mix with redshirt freshman
Tsahai Corbie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) as well as true freshmen
Diamond Adams (South Bend, Ind.),
E'Mya Price (Charlotte, N.C.),
Jalynda Salley (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and
Elan Wali (Wyncote, Pa) all expected to get significant minutes on the hardwood.
