HAMPTON, Va. - Coppin State dropped a MEAC game at Hampton University, 70-59 in overtime on Wednesday night. The Eagles fall to 4-20 on the year and 4-5 in the MEAC while the Pirates improve to 9-13 with a 4-3 mark in conference play.
Lamar Morgan led Coppin with 17 points while shooting 5-of-7 from 3-point range while
Karonn Davis added 16 points to go with six rebounds and six assists. Off the bench,
Jordan Hardwick had the best game of his young career with eight points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots, all of which were career-highs.
With 1:35 left in regulation, Hampton held a 51-46 lead but Davis drove to the hoop and converted on a layup. Fouled on the play, Davis also converted on the free throw which was the Eagles' first free throw attempt of the night. Following a miss by the Pirates, Morgan buried a triple with 1:05 remaining go give Coppin a 52-51 lead.
The Eagles were able to force another Hampton miss on the Pirates' ensuing possession and after
Cedric Council grabbed an offensive rebound, two-straight Hampton fouls allowed Coppin to get into a bonus situation. Davis buried the front half of the one-and-one and made the second as well to extend the advantage to 54-51 with eight ticks left.
Following a Pirates timeout, Coppin was called for a foul with five seconds left on a 3-point attempt and Lysander Bracey made all three to tie the game. The Eagles called a timeout to setup a play but the go-ahead attempt fell short and sent the game into overtime where Hampton scored the first ten points and never looked back.
Coppin outshot Hampton, 31.1% to 30.9% with two more made field goals and made ten 3-pointers compared to just seven for the Pirates. The free throw line proved to be the difference with the Pirates making 21-of-26 from the stripe compared to just 3-of-3 for the Eagles.
Bracey led all scorers with 22 points off the bench while Jermaine Marrow added 20 points.
