DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Coppin State's men's basketball team was defeated on the road by MEAC rival Bethune-Cookman, 80-60, on Saturday afternoon at Moore Gymnasium. The Eagles now stand at 4-21 overall and 4-6 in the MEAC while the Wildcats improve to 12-11 with a 6-2 mark in conference play.
Lamar Morgan led Coppin with 16 points while sinking five 3-pointers and
Karonn Davis added 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting to go with eight assists and four rebounds.
Kent Auslander and
Lucian Brownlee chipped in with seven points apiece off the bench and
KeAndre Fair added six points.
Bethune used a 18-7 run midway through the first half to extend a lead into double digits and led by as many as 16 in the period. The Eagles were able to battle back, however, and after they faced a 35-19 deficit with 6:41 left, used a 12-1 run to pull within five with 3:19 remaining.
Following a three by Davis which made the score, 36-31, the Wildcats hit a pair of three's to go into the break with a 42-31 lead.
Fair hit a jumper in the paint to open the second half to get within single digits but that was as close as Coppin would get the rest of the way.
Bethune outshot the Navy & Gold, 49.2% to 38.2% and made an impressive 14-of-29 from distance. The Wildcats also outrebounded Coppin, 42-28 and turned 14 offensive rebounds into 24 second-chance points.
Isaiah Bailey and Shawntrez Davis scored 22 points each for Bethune.
The Eagles will make their way up north to take on South Carolina State as they close out a three-game road trip on Monday, February 5 at 7:30 pm.
