Student Athlete Spotlight: Bowling's Jasmine Newman

Junior Jasmine Newman (psychology major/criminal justice minor) is the only returner from last season that bowled over 200 points. She ranked second on her squad averaging 153.64 pins and was named the 2016 Coppin State Bowling Most Valuable Player at the annual athletic awards banquet.

We sat down with Jasmine for this week's Student-Athlete Spotlight:

What first got you interested in your sport?
My dad actually got me interested in bowling. He first introduced it to me when I was a freshman in high school and ever since then I have been hooked.

What made you come to Coppin State?
I didn't hear about Coppin State until the former bowling coach reached out to me. Once I came for a tour, I fell in love and had to come here.

What has been your favorite class at Coppin State?
My favorite class would have to be theories of personality with Professor Schmitt.

What is your favorite thing about Coppin State?
My favorite thing about Coppin would be how intimate the campus community is.

What is some of the best advice that your coach has given you?
The best advice I have received from my coach was when she told me to slow down my approach. Since then I have really seen a difference in the way that I bowl.

What is the most difficult part about being a student athlete?
The most difficult part of being a student athlete would have to be trying to complete your homework after tournaments. I am usually always tired and hurting after competing and often do not feel like doing homework, but it has to get done.

What motivates you to succeed?
My motivation to be successful is not only my family and friends that support me, but my own personal goals. I know where I want to be in life and I will not stop until I get there.

When you finally have a break from school and sports, what do you like to do?
I love to dance with Chosen Generation.

If you could give advice to incoming freshmen about being a student athlete, what would you tell them?
Other than the typical time management, my advice to freshmen is to be open to learn. You are going to learn a lot of different techniques to improve your game, but you also will learn college material in class so just be ready.

What has been your favorite moment so far while playing at Coppin State?
My favorite moment so far while playing at Coppin would have to be when I broke the school record my freshmen year against Delaware State.

How has Coppin State prepared you for life after collegiate sports?
Coppin has prepared me for life after collegiate sports by providing different workshops and resources on campus that can really benefit me in the long run.
