KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Coppin State University's bowling team opened their 2016-17 season at the inaugural Bud Whitman Memorial tournament hosted by Kutztown University at Berks Lanes in Reading on October 15-16. Coppin State (1-8) picked up a victory against Medaille in baker play.
The Eagles knocked down 3,491 pins in five baker matches on Saturday. In their first match against Duquesne, the Eagles took an early loss (823-645), but responded with a victory in their next match. Coppin State's first win came with a 706-554 score over Medaille. In their next two matches CSU suffered setbacks to St. Francis Brooklyn (794-724) and to LIU-Brooklyn (979-694).
Delaware State posted the highest team score of the day with a total of 4,977. Long Island, Adelphi, St. Francis (PA) and Franklin Pierce rounded out the top-five.
On Sunday, Coppin State came up short in the five matches bowled. Two Eagles stepped up to lead the team averaging over 160 pinfalls. Junior
Jasmine Newman averaged 167.75 and freshman
Mya Hamlett averaged 163.5. Newman carried the load for the Eagles in their first match against St. Francis (PA) with a team-high 179 despite an 898-576 loss. Newman also led CSU against Caldwell (861-733) bowling 184.
Freshman
Kaylin Hobson threw 166 to lead the Eagles against Mount Aloysius (833-687). Hobson averaged 144.75 in five games. Junior
Erica Monk threw a team-best 171 against Youngtown (992-803). She averaged 153.25 over the weekend. Sophomore
Jasmyne Johnson was second on the team with 165 pinfalls against Youngstown. She started in three games averaging 144. Freshman
Nia Turner threw the first 200+ game of the day for CSU with a 214 in a 833-783 loss to Virginia State.
Delaware State won Sunday's traditional event with a total pinfall of 5130. It went 9-1 over the weekend. CSU finished with a total pinfall of 3682 on Sunday, good for 17th.
"The competition field was very large this weekend, we came across very tough teams," said head women's bowling coach
Shaunita Middleton. "I was proud on how my bowlers competed this weekend. We're back at practice starting today (Monday), planning on getting stronger and more consistent. I am excited for what the future holds."
