Coppin State falls short at Howard

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Coppin State fell short in a 7-6 loss to Howard Monday night to close out a three-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series at Nationals Junior Park.

A bottom of the seventh inning walk-off two-run homer by Jenny Ly gave the Bison the final advantage.

Down 2-1 at the top of the third inning, senior Candice Van Horn singled to leftfield, allowing junior Danielle Smith to score. Shortly after, junior Alanna Williams singled to let classmate Shelby Mendoza cross the home plate.

Instead of swinging, the Eagles (3-17 overall, 3-3 MEAC) turned two walks into four stolen bases and two runs in the top of the fourth.

While Van Horn stole second, Smith jumped on the opportunity and stole home. A few plays later, Van Horn decided to steal third and an errant throw gave her the advantage to score. Smith and Van Horn's daredevil tactics put the Eagles (3-17 overall, 3-3 MEAC) up 5-2.

After five innings, the score was tied at 5-5 before Williams singled to second base and Smith scored in the top of the sixth inning to give Coppin State a 6-5 lead.

Smith led the way with three runs and two hits on the day. Van Horn was close behind, adding two runs, one hit and an RBI to the mix.

Both Smith and Van Horn are on seven-game hitting steaks and have reached base in each of the last seven outings.

Mendoza put up two hits and a run to extend her 10-game hitting streak. She has gotten on base in 11 consecutive games.

Williams had a game-high four hits and team-best three RBIs.

Howard (11-21, 5-4) was led by Jenny Ly, who padded the stat sheet with two runs, two hits and four RBIs.

Coppin State heads to the City of Brotherly Love to face Drexel University on Wednesday in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
