Seniors leaving CSU baseball in good hands despite setback to DSU

HANOVER, Md. – Jhar Devilme's dominant mound outing along with hits from Bryant Miranda and Bobby Dragon were highlights for the Coppin State baseball team during a 12-0 loss to Delaware State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest at Joe Cannon Stadium Sunday afternoon.

The defeat concluded the home portion of the Eagles' 2015 schedule. Prior to the start of the game, Coppin State celebrated its seven senior players: Nathan Pitts, Alejandro Hernandez, Michael Wright, Yayha Muhammed, Chris Vazquez, Jeffrey Fitch and William Brown. Every player enjoyed bright moments during their Coppin State careers.

Surrounded by family members and girlfriends, each player received a giant colorful photo collage of their baseball careers. The seniors will be missed, but they can exit knowing they will leave Coppin State baseball in great hands. During their time together, the seniors helped Coppin State win three MEAC Tournament games and enjoy the nation's largest win-loss turnaround from 2012 to 2013.

During the game, the underclassmen showed that Coppin State baseball has a bright future. Devilme was special on Sunday. He struck out a career-best eight batters in 3.1 innings. It was the fourth time this season, Devilme struck out at least six hitters in a game. He was a strike generator and crowd motivator as he struck out the side in the fifth inning.

Miranda and Dragon had consecutive two-out singles in the bottom of the sixth inning. Colin Dower was a pest all game at the long as he worked out a hat-trick of walks for the Eagles. Together this season, the triumvirate of Miranda, Dragon and Dower have combined for 101 hits. Dragon leads CSU with a .311 average and 42 hits. Miranda along with junior Jack Kraft have 31 hits each, which is second on the team.

Coppin State returns to action Wednesday afternoon when it visits George Washington University for a 3:00 p.m. start. The Eagles conclude their 2015 season with a  weekend series at Norfolk State on Saturday and Sunday.
