EMMITSBURG, Md. – Coppin State's softball team dropped a doubleheader to Mount St. Mary's (Md.) Wednesday afternoon at Meadows Field by scores of 11-0 and 7-5, respectively.
Coppin State got off to a fast start in the second game when senior
Candice Van Horn singled to left field, allowing juniors
Shelby Mendoza and
Danielle Smith to score.
Smith led the Eagles (0-14) with two runs, two hits and two RBIs, all of which happened in the second game. Smith hit her second home run of the season with a two-run over left field in the top of the second inning to put Coppin State up 4-2.
During the top of the third inning, senior
Samantha Denlinger singled up the middle, allowing Van Horn to cross home plate.
"This was the best game we played all year," head coach
Ty Robinson said. "Unfortunately, we left too many runners on base and had costly errors."
Freshmen
Taylor Haller and
Tanysha Tennassee along with Mendoza had hits in the opening game.
Six players recorded at least one hit in today's doubleheader for the first time this season.
Morgan Alisauckas topped the Mount (5-16) with four RBIs, four hits and four runs during the doubleheader.
Van Horn leads Coppin State with 10 hits, seven runs and seven RBIs. She has a .333 batting average. Mendoza is on a four game hitting streak and has reached base in five consecutive games.
Coppin State is back on the road to open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play against Maryland Eastern Shore in a three-game series. The Eagles will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. and conclude competition on Sunday at noon.
