SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Coppin State baseball team tied a season-high in runs during a 12-7 setback to Wofford in a non-conference contest at King Field Wednesday night.
Leading Coppin State's offensive attack was
Bryant Miranda, who had his second three-hit game of the season. He had three hits against Army on March 7. Miranda finished with hits in each game against Wofford.
Michael Wright and
Lance Montano also had two hits each for the Eagles (1-12 overall).
George Dragon extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single in the ninth inning. Dragon has reached base in every game this season for Coppin State.
Jacquez Hunn had a pair of walks to go along with his RBI hit in the second inning. Jack Kraft drew three walks and had a single.
Wright delivered a clutch two-run game-tying single in the fifth inning that scored Miranda and Montano. Wright's third hit of the two-game set tied the game at 7-7. Unfortunately, the Eagles only had four base runners and two hits over the final four innings.
Coppin State displayed plenty of fight overcoming a 4-0 deficit after the first inning. The Eagles scored once in the second inning and plated four runs in the third inning. Overall, Coppin State finished with 10 hits, the third time this season it recorded double digit hits in a game as a team.
DeSean Rabb threw 1.1 scoreless innings in relief while
Jhar Devilme struck out three batters in 1.2 innings.
The Terriers (18-5) scored five runs in the late innings to get past a determined Coppin State squad that battled back from deficits throughout the contest. The big hit in the game occurred with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning when James Plaisted delivered a two-run single that snapped a 7-7 tie.
Coppin State returns to action Saturday when it hosts Delaware State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest at Joe Cannon Stadium. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1:00 p.m. and Sunday's series finale begins at 12:00 p.m.
