PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Coppin State baseball team fell in the series finale to Maryland Eastern Shore 4-3 in 11 innings at Hawk Stadium Monday afternoon.
It was a tough ending for the Eagles, who held leads of 2-0 heading to the bottom of the eighth inning and 3-2 going to the bottom of the 10th inning. The Hawks rallied both teams to win all three games of the opening Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) set.
Joshua James drove home the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning for the Hawks.
Leading Coppin State (1-10 overall, 0-3 MEAC) was second baseman
Colin Dower, who had his first three hit game of his career. Dower had scored the go-ahead run in the 10th inning for Coppin State on
George Dragon's sacrifice fly. It was the fourth straight game in which Dragon drove in a run. He also extended his hitting streak to a season-high six games.
Dower also drove home a run in the top of the seventh inning that helped the Eagles extend their early advantage to 2-0. Coppin State's pitching staff finished with 12 strikeouts and hurled seven innings of shutout baseball led by
Jhar Devilme's four fantastic frames in which he allowed one hit and fanned three batters.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, Maryland Eastern Shore turned a one-out error along with a pair of wild pitches in the bottom of the eighth inning into two runs to knot the score. That inning turned the game around.
Coppin State continues its road trip when it visits Wofford, which is 16-5 overall, for single games on Tuesday and Wednesday evening.
Myles Taylor and Yayha Muhammed are Coppin State's scheduled starters. Wofford swept Iona in its last outing on Sunday.
