BALTIMORE – Coppin State will brave brisk temperatures when it visits Delaware State Monday at 5:30 p.m. in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest from Memorial Gym.
The Eagles (4-18 overall, 3-8 MEAC) lead the all-time series against the Hornets, 35-20. Coppin State has won the past four meetings between the two teams, including both of last year's meetings, 80-75 in Dover and 81-54 at home.
In the second game against Delaware State,
Janelle Lane had 19 points and six rebounds while
Jordan Swails put up 16 points and six boards.
Speaking of Swails and Lane, the pair showed out in Coppin State's 75-61 win over Howard Saturday afternoon in the Physical Education Complex. Swails had a career night with her second double-double of the season (24 points, 13 rebounds). Lane also had her second double-double this year with 17 points and a career-best 11 boards.
Genesis Lucas added 15 points to the mix.
Coppin State had an impressive game on both ends of the court, shooting 82.6 percent from the free-throw line and scoring 31 points off of Howard's 20 turnovers.
"For the games going forward we need to piggy back off of this game and our energy," Swails said last night. "Everything we did collectively needs to keep going for every other game in the MEAC."
Swails is the top scorer for the Eagles, averaging 10.5 points per game. Lane isn't far behind with 10.1 points.
Bria Harris leads the team in rebounding with 7.3 boards per contest.
Coppin State has the third-best three-point field goal percentage in the MEAC (31.4) and ranks fifth in field goal percentage (37.0).
Delaware State (5-18, 2-8) was also in action on Valentine's Day but suffered a much different fate, falling to Maryland Eastern Shore on the road, 96-59. The Hornets struck first, scoring the game's first 10 points but couldn't keep up with the Hawks. DSU had four players in double figures, led by Tierra Hawkins with 21 points. Mikah Aldridge had 13 points. Amber Bogard and Nikkei Blackburn tallied 10 points apiece.
The Hornets lead the MEAC in field goal percentage (42.4) and is second in free-throw percentage (70.9). Hawkins stands third in the conference in scoring, averaging 17.6 points. She ranks fifth with 8.2 rebounds per game and tops the MEAC with a 54.7 field goal percentage.
Coppin State returns to Baltimore to host Norfolk State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
