MILLSBORO, Del. – The Coppin State bowling team competed hard during its weekend tournament at the UMES Hawk Classic sponsored by The Hyatt Place Dewey.
In the event held at Millsboro Lanes, Coppin State defeated New Jersey City, 740-724, in a Baker match Friday afternoon and was highly competitive during Sunday's action. The Lady Eagles dropped a close decision to New Jersey City when they lost in a roll-off, the bowling version of overtime. During traditional team matches, CSU bowled over 700 twice, including a 711 against Sacred Heart.
The Lady Eagles had some strong performances especially from junior
Brionca Beard, who rolled a career-best 174 against Morgan State on Saturday.
Jasmine Newman had the best overall individual matches for Coppin State with a 185 against Sacred Heart and a 178 against Adelphi. Newman has bowled at least 170 or better 18 times in her career.
For the weekend, Newman led Coppin State with a 153.67 pinfall average while sophomore
Erica Monk had a 132.17 average. Beard had a solid 136.75 average. Freshman Jasmyne Johnson, bowling competitively for the first time since middle school, rolled a high game of 147 against Sacred Heart.
Senior
Shelby Mendoza bowled a career best 144 against Sacred Heart. She averaged a 121.60 in five matches. Junior
Shawdae Frederick's top game was a 122 against Sacred Heart.
"The ladies are continuing to work hard and better their consistency," first-year Coppin State head coach
Shaunita Middleton said. "We played against some competitive teams this weekend, but even when we found ourselves trailing they stayed positive and kept each other uplifted. I am proud of their fight."
Coppin State will return to action on the weekend of December 5-6 when it competes in the second MEAC Northern Division meet of the season in Delaware's capital city of Dover.
