Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Coppin State senior guard
Amber Griffin has always enjoyed distributing the ball ever since she started playing basketball.
Her charitable ways have earned her place in Coppin State women's basketball history. She recorded her 300th career assist, becoming the third CSU women's player – and first since 2008 – to reach that milestone in program history during Monday's nonconference women's basketball game at West Virginia.
"Dishing the ball has always been my favorite thing to do because of watching Magic Johnson highlights," Griffin said following Coppin State's 96-54 setback to West Virginia at the Coliseum. "I just feel so honored to be the third in Coppin State history to reach this milestone. It's a blessing and I am glad I'll leave here always being in the record books."
Griffin finished with eight points and four assists to join legends LeShawn Scott (599 assists) and Shalamar Oakley (326) in the Coppin State 300-assist club. Griffin's inclusion in this special group is remarkable considering she overcome a torn anterior cruiciate ligament at the end of her senior year in high school.
Coppin State placed three players in double figures led by senior
Janelle Lane's 13 points. In reaching double figures for the 24th time in her career, Lane was 4-for-8 shooting from the field. Coppin State junior guard
Keena Samuels continued her strong beginning to the season by scoring 12 points for the second straight contest.
Senior guard
Jordan Swails tallied 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting. She swished both of her 3-pointers. Senior
Omaah Tayong grabbed a team best nine rebounds while sophomore
Genesis Lucas led the Lady Eagles with five assists.
Coppin State (0-2 overall) outscored West Virginia (2-0) in the second half, scoring a school record 19 points for a quarter in each of the final two frames. In its first two games this season, Coppin State has outscored its opponents in the third quarter.
Leading West Virginia was senior guard Bria Holmes, who scored 23 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field. Coppin State returns to action Thursday afternoon when it hosts UMBC in its home opener at noon. It will be a "School Day" event.
