BALTIMORE – The Coppin State women's bowling team is back on the road at the Red Flash Invitational.

The three-day tournament hosted by St. Francis University will be Coppin State's final non-conference competition of the season.

The Eagles will start the weekend out with Felician, St. Francis, Mount Aloysius, New Jersey City and Kutztown on Friday in Baker games. Coppin State will face Fairleigh Dickinson, Pitt-Bradford, Norfolk State, Cheyney, Penn State-Altoona and Hampton in Saturday's traditional matches. With the exception of Penn-State Altoona, Coppin State has faced each of these schools at least once this season.

"We're going against some highly ranked teams," junior Kache Woods said. "We have to stay optimistic and positive. Hopefully that'll make a difference in our game. A lot of the times we play highly ranked teams we get distracted. We need to focus on ourselves and hopefully we'll do well."

The Eagles recently returned from Pennsylvania after competing at the Kutztown Invitational last weekend.

Freshman Jasmine Newman led Coppin State with 949 pins and a 158.2 pinfall. Newman bowled a team-best 200 against Mount Aloysius, her third time rolling at least 200.

Woods followed up with 930 pins while classmate Kristen Sharpe knocked down 863 pins. Sophomore Shelby Mendoza had a career weekend with 649 pins and a 115.7 average.

Coppin State also added junior Danielle Smith, a current softball player, to the bowling roster. In her first career outing, she tallied 799 pins and averaged 133.2. She rolled the third-highest total on the team with 177 against Cheyney.

For the season, three Eagles have bested the 5,000 pin mark. Sharpe tops the team with 5,835 pins and a 157.7 average through 37 games played. Newman isn't far behind with 5,696 pins, averaging a 153.9 pinfall after six tournaments. After spending two months out of competition due to injury, Woods rounds out the trio with 5,081 pins through 32 appearances. She has a 158.8 average.

After this weekend, Coppin State's efforts will be focused on tournament play. The Eagles are back in action at the third Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division Meet of the season on Saturday Feb. 28 and Sunday Mar. 1.
