Bowling ready to return to action at Bowie Invitational

BALTIMORE – Coppin State's bowling team is back in action at the Bulldog Classic.

The meet hosted by Bowie State will be held from Friday through Sunday at AMF Laurel Lanes (15013 Baltimore Avenue in Laurel, Md.). Participating teams include Bowie State University, Coppin State University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Hampton University, Howard University, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, Virginia State University and Virginia Union University.

This will be Coppin State's first meet in more than a month. The last time out for the Eagles at the second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division Meet during the first weekend of December resulted in a record-setting performance from freshman Jasmine Newman.

Newman rolled a school-record and career-best 266 against Delaware State. Junior Kristen Sharpe set the previous mark of 246 last year. After five traditional matches, Newman finished seventh overall with a 189.4 pinfall.

Sharpe knocked down 231 pins against Hampton and had a 176.2 average. Her performance helped her finish 10th overall in the traditional team matches. This was the fifth time she rolled over 200 since the start of the 2013 season.

Sophomores Maribel Lovos and Brionca Beard averaged 106.8 and 100.4 pins, respectively. Lovos bowled 120 against Delaware State while Beard knocked down 109 pins against Morgan State.

With four tournaments under her belt, Sharpe leads Coppin State with 4,157 pins and a 159.9 average. Newman isn't far behind with a 154 pinfall and 4,004 pins.

Junior Kache Woods will be returning to the line-up after taking time off due to an injury. She has 3,340 pins and a 159.1 average through three competitions.

After more than a month off, the Eagles are hoping to get back into a rhythm.

"We took time out to regroup and let some injures heal," head coach Ty Robinson said. "This will be a tune-up for getting ready for conference play. Now we're looking to make a final run for the MEAC tournament."
