Bowling Concludes Weekend on High Note

BALTIMORE – Coppin State's bowling team finished the weekend at the FDU Jamboree.

The Eagles went 3-11 after three days of competition. Coppin State went 1-10 in team matches and 2-1 in Baker games.

During Saturday's team matches, Coppin State pushed past Virginia State, 757-739. On Sunday, the Eagles rallied to beat Pitt-Bradford (4-3) and Caldwell (4-2) in Baker games.

The FDU Jamboree is no easy tournament, hosting some of the best bowling teams in the nation.

"This was one of the top ranked tournaments of the season," coach Ty Robinson said. "17 of the teams there are ranked in the top 25. Our performance this weekend could've been much better but when you face top 25 programs they show your weaknesses right away. Sunday we raised our level of play by winning two games in the final frame."

Junior Kache Woods led the team with 1,753 pins and averaged a 159.3 pinfall. She had a high game of 199 against Vanderbilt.

Junior Kristen Sharpe and freshman Jasmine Newman each bowled a team-high 216.

It was also a season-high pinfall for Sharpe, who topped 200 for the fourth time since the start of the 2013 season. She finished with 1,667 pins knocked down and averaged a 151.5 pinfall.

Newman's 216 pinfall against Virginia State marks a career-high for the newcomer. She was third on the team with 1,646 pins and averaged a 149.6 pinfall.

Sophomore Brionca Beard recorded a career-high 194 pinfall against Valparasio. She averaged a 125.3 pinfall and finished with 1,253 pins. Classmates Maribel Lovos and Shawdae Frederick bowled 866 and 366, respectively. Lovos averaged a 108.2 pinfall and had a career-high 133 pins against Bethune-Cookman. Frederick rolled 109 against Stephen F. Austin and averaged 91.5 pins.

The Eagles head to Washington, D.C. for the first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division Meet of the season. As the team prepares, they know there is plenty of work to get done.

"We need to work extremely hard, change our training, and hope it pays off going into the MEAC this weekend," Robinson said.
