BALTIMORE – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), in coordination with Coppin State University focused its community engagement efforts on anti-bullying during Friday's opening day of the 2014 Volleyball.
Each of the 900 or so kids from more than 10 elementary and middle schools in West Baltimore received a blue bag with a personalized hand-written "anti-bullying' message from a member of each of the conference institutions' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as well as a comic book focusing on that same subject.
In addition every school participated in a poster contest which was judged earlier today by members of the Coppin State University faculty. Each school designed a poster that focused on an "anti-bullying" message.
The winners were presented with trophies by Coppin State Director of Athletics Derrick K. Ramsey. Beechfield Elementary School won first place while Gwynns Falls Elementary School took second and third place.
"This was an opportunity for these kids to get out and see what a University environment is all about," Ramsey said. "More specific to this bullying situation, it's been an ongoing problem in our schools and in our community and I don't think it's ever too early to talk to young people about anti-bullying and the significance of it. Judging the posters was hard because a number of them were awesome."
