LIVE STATISTICS VIDEO ACCESS (PAY SUBSCRIPTION) BALTIMORE -- The Coppin State women's basketball program starts the 2014-15 season against North Carolina State Sunday afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh. The game will tip at 2:00 p.m. This is the first meeting between the two schools.
The Eagles will look to post their fourth consecutive winning season and for the 12th time under head coach
Derek Brown.
A QUICK LOOK AT COPPIN STATE: The Eagles return seven players from last season's team that won 17 games and advanced to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship game last year. The returnees include senior forward
Bria Harris and juniors
Janelle Lane,
Jordan Swails,
Tanaysa Henderson and
Omaah Tayong and
Amber Griffin along with sophomore
Keena Samuels. Coppin State was picked fourth in the MEAC in the preseason coaches' poll.
IN HER LANE: The Eagles leading returning scorer, junior
Janelle Lane averaged 5.8 points and finished the season by making 50 percent of her shots (75-for-150). She scored a career-high 19 points on 9-for-18 shooting in a win against Delaware State. Lane was second on the team with 14 blocked shots. She grabbed six or more rebounds nine times last season.
ACC AGAIN: This is the second straight season that the Eagles are beginning the season against its second consecutive ACC opponent. The Eagles started the 2013-14 season at Georgia Tech. Coppin State will play two of its first three games this season against ACC opponents (N.C. State and Wake Forest). Later in the year, the Eagles will play Miami and former ACC member Maryland, who are now members of the B1G-10 Conference.
ABOUT N.C. STATE: N.C. State earned a dominating victory over Tennessee State in its season opener on Friday, defeating the Lady Tigers by a final count of 84-55. Four Wolfpackers scored in double figures in the win, with redshirt sophomore transfer Dominique Wilson leading all scorers with a career-high 20 points. N.C. State enjoyed a strong 2013-14 season, posting an overall record of 25-8 which included an 11-5 mark in ACC play. The Wolfpack participated in the NCAA tournament for the 22nd time in program history before seeing their season come to an end in the opening round to BYU in Los Angeles.
