BALTIMORE – The Coppin State women's bowling team opened conference play in the first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division Meet of the season.
Over the weekend, Coppin State faced Delaware State, Morgan State, Howard, UMES, and Hampton. The Eagles were 2-8 in the tournament, going 1-4 in both the team and Baker matches.
"It's touchy when you go 2-8 to open conference play," coach
Ty Robinson said. "We really fought hard this weekend. We let a couple games slip away from us. We still need to get better at hitting our mark and to pick up our spares."
Both of the weekends victories came against Hampton. On Saturday, Coppin State fought hard to beat Hampton in a team match, 724-713. On Sunday, the Eagles rallied for a 4-1 win over the Pirates.
Juniors
Kristen Sharpe and
Kache Woods led the Eagles, knocking down 782 and 781 pins, respectively.
Sharpe averaged 156.4 pins and rolled 173 against Delaware State. Woods had 173 pins against Hampton and averaged a 156.2 pinfall.
Woods knows that it will take a better effort to get back to the MEAC Championship.
"As a team we could've done better," Woods said. "It always comes down to spares and we were in all of our games but we couldn't make our spares when we needed to. We have to make adjustments. The sooner we realize the adjustments we need to make the better. We have to capitalize on that. If we realize what we did wrong and did right, we can master our strengths and weaknesses."
Freshman
Jasmine Newman picked up 747 pins and had a high-game of 188 against Howard. She averaged a 149.4 pinfall.
Sophomore
Brionca Beard knocked down 565 pins. She bowled 128 against Howard and averaged a 113 pinfall. Classmates
Maribel Lovos and
Shawdae Frederick finished with 320 and 210 pins each. Lovos rolled 128 against Delaware State and averaged 106.7 pins. Frederick averaged a 105 pinfall and had a career-high 117 against Hampton.
This wasn't the start MEAC play the Eagles desired but there's no time for them hang their heads in defeat.
"We have to keep our spirits up," Sharpe said. "It definitely gets frustrating and we have to make some adjustments. Spares make the games. It doesn't matter if you get strikes or split. Strikes are going to come but you need the spares."
Coppin State will have plenty of time to prepare for its next competition. The Eagles return to action on Dec. 6 & 7 in Princess Anne, MD for the second MEAC Northern Division Meet of the season.
