CHESAPEAKE, Va. – The finest season in the history of the Coppin State women's bowling program ended at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships Saturday morning.
However, despite a 4-1 setback to third-ranked Maryland-Eastern Shore and 4-0 loss to Bethune-Cookman in best-of-seven Baker matches, the Eagles enjoyed a season like no other. Coppin State set a school record for wins with 27 and MEAC triumphs with 11 while qualifying for the MEAC tournament for the first time in program history.
The Eagles displayed plenty of fight in their match against the powerful Hawks. After dropping the first two matches, CSU edged UMES, 152-151, in the third game to push the Hawks. Coppin's best series was a 169 in the second game of the series against UMES.
The defending MEAC Tournament champions and top-seeded Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks bowled their way into the championship match defeating Norfolk State (4-0) and North Carolina A&T (4-1) in the winner's portion of the bracket.
The Lady Hawks await the winner of tomorrow's North Carolina A&T/Florida A&M semifinal to determine the championship pair. The 2014 MEAC Bowling Championship wraps up on tomorrow at 10 a.m. beginning with the semifinal round and concluding with the championship final at noon. The championship match will be televised in a tape-delayed format and will air on ESPNU on March 31 at 10:30 p.m.
Admission to the bowling championship is free and open to the public.
