SMYRNA, Del. – The Coppin State men's cross country team opened its 2026 season with a strong second-place finish at the Delaware State University Sting Invite on Friday afternoon at the Delaware State Research and Outreach Center.
The Eagles finished with 47 points, trailing only host Delaware State, which recorded 22 points. Morgan State finished third with 85 points, followed by Maryland Eastern Shore, Lincoln (Pa.), Bowie State and Cheyney.
Senior
Lucky Maila led the way for Coppin State, placing fifth overall in the 5K with a time of 15:45.4. Senior teammate
Humed Nura followed closely behind, finishing sixth in 15:46.7.
The Eagles placed five runners among the top 13 finishers, with senior
Asa Francis finishing 11th in 16:51.8. Sophomore
Elijah Hicks was 12th in 17:18.7, while senior
Etiam Torgbenu rounded out the scoring five with a 13th-place finish in 17:20.4.
Freshman
Aaiden Clark finished 21st overall in 18:15.4, followed by freshman
Elijah Collins, who crossed the finish line 24th in 18:25.6. Sophomore
Xavier Grant placed 36th in 19:41.3.
Coppin State's five scoring runners combined for a team time of 1:23:02, averaging 16:36 per runner.
CSU returns to action on Saturday, September 19 for the UMES Invite in Princess Anne, Md.
