NORFOLK, Va. – Despite 16 points apiece from
Hussain Williams and
DeMariontay Hall, the Coppin State men's basketball team fell at Norfolk State, 103-76, on Saturday afternoon at PEC Arena. The Eagles fell to 3-19 overall and 1-4 in the MEAC while the Spartans moved to 10-12 on the year and 3-2 in league play.
Williams hit four 3-pointers and four free throws while Hall, who had not played since early December, hit 5-of-8 from the field to go with six free throws.
Hassan Perkins added 15 points while hitting all four of his field goals and six free throws while adding four steals.
The Eagles also got nine points from
Jamari Piercy and eight from
Taj Thweatt who led the team with five rebounds.
Coppin shot 46.4% from the floor but allowed Norfolk State to hit 57.1% from the field to go with 14 3-pointers and 33-of-43 free throws. The Eagles shot an alarming 47.4% from the line, making just 18-of-38 attempts.
An early three by
Khali Horton gave the Eagles a 3-2 lead but that was Coppin's only lead of the game as Norfolk built a double-digit lead by the midway point of the first half. Coppin kept the deficit in range throughout the rest of the period before Norfolk hit a three in the closing seconds to go up 49-36 at the half.
Coppin's home game against Howard on Monday, January 26 has been postponed, and the Eagles are set to host Morgan State on Saturday, January 31 at 4:30 pm. Prior to the game, assistant coach
Stephen Stewart, the 1994 and 1995 MEAC Player of the Year, will have his jersey retired.
