Men’s Hoops Prevails in Battle of the Birds at Maryland Eastern Shore

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Toby Nnadozie led all players with 17 points to lead the Coppin State men's basketball team to a 62-57 MEAC victory at Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday night at the Hytche Center.  The Eagles improved to 4-18 overall and 2-5 in the MEAC while the Hawks fell to 4-18 on the year and 0-6 in league play.

  • Nnadozie hit 4-of-10 shots from the floor with three 3-pointers and also made all six of his free throws against his former team. He added five rebounds, three assists and a steal.
  • Julius Ellerbe III and Peter Oduro added 12 points apiece with Ellerbe notching a double-double with ten rebounds along with five assists and two steals.
  • Khali Horton and Camaren Sparrow scored seven points apiece, followed by Cam'Ron Brown with four points, five rebounds and two assists.
  • Coppin outshot UMES, 45.5% to 40.4% while making eight 3-pointers and 14-of-22 from the line.
  • In the second half, Coppin hit 50% from the floor, including 6-of-12 from downtown and 9-of-14 from the stripe.
How it Happened
  • The first half was back-and-forth throughout with neither team leading by more than five in the period.
  • Maryland Eastern Shore held a 15-10 advantage with 11:48 left following six-straight points, but Coppin it five free throws to tie the score just over three minutes later.
  • UMES retook the lead with a three, and the teams traded baskets until Nnadozie and Ellerbe hit triples in the final 90 seconds of the period, giving CSU a 25-23 lead at the break.
  • Nnadozie opened the second half with a three and scored Coppin's first seven points of the period.
  • Oduro then hit a jumper, extending CSU's advantage to 34-28, which was the team's largest at the time.
  • The hosts cut the deficit in half with a three-point play with 16:48 remaining before Coppin went on an 8-0 run with threes from Sparrow and Nnadozie.
  • A 6-0 run by UMES got the Hawks back to within 42-37 with 12:05 remaining before buckets by Oduro and Horton increased the lead back to nine.
  • Once again, the Hawks fought back, getting to within 48-47 with 5:47 remaining, but Ellerbe buried a three on the ensuing possession.
  • Ellerbe and Horton answered baskets from UMES with a pair of triples to keep the hosts at bay, and Ellerbe sealed the win with a pair of free throws with three seconds remaining.
Up Next: Coppin will be off until Saturday, February 15 when it travels to face NC Central in a 4 pm tipoff on ESPN+.  Two nights later, CSU will take on South Carolina State in Orangeburg.
