NORFOLK, Va. – For a league-high fourth time this season, Coppin State's
Cherisse Atilano has been named the MEAC Volleyball Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. Atilano received five weekly honors from the MEAC this season and was the only freshman to also receive a Player of the Week award.
An outside hitter from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, Atilano tallied four kills with 12 digs and three aces in Coppin's sweep of Morgan State in the regular season finale last Friday.
Atilano finished the season ranked eighth in the MEAC in kills per set (2.79) and aces per set (0.36) while placing seventh in both digs/set (2.69) and points per set (3.26). She finished second in the league in service aces (44) and double-doubles (13) and fifth in kills (337), points (394.5) and digs (325).
In MEAC play, the freshman sensation was even better, recording 2.94 kills per set on .260 hitting (10
th) to go with 3.28 digs (5
th) and a league-high 26 aces for 3.52 points per set.
Coppin State (20-11, 13-1 MEAC) won its fourth MEAC Regular Season Title and hosts the MEAC Tournament on November 20-22 at PEC Arena. The top-seeded Eagles take on #8 South Carolina State in the Quarterfinals at 2 pm on Thursday afternoon with all matches airing on ESPN+.
