BALTIMORE – Coppin State volleyball's program-record ten-match winning streak ended in a 3-2 (25-27, 25-19, 23-25, 25-13, 15-3) loss to UMBC on Wednesday night at PEC Arena. The Eagles fell to 16-10 on the season while the Retrievers improved to 8-10 overall.
TaKenya Stafford and
Cherisse Atilano both recorded double-doubles, combining for 28 kills and 25 digs while
Ivanna Luna also finished with ten kills.
Andrea Cintron added a career-high seven kills while
Ahzhi Coleman added three kills and a team-high five blocks to go over 200 blocks in her career. Luna finished just behind Coleman with four blocks.
Cintron,
Azul Pilahg and
Andrea Serrano had 14 assists apiece with Serrano serving a pair of aces as well. The trio helped Coppin hit .164 for the match, but the Eagles hit -.077 in the final two sets after outhitting UMBC, .252 to .217 in the first three sets.
Coco Figueroa led all players with 21 digs, jumping into fourth on Coppin's all-time digs list past
Glorines Rosado ('17) and just behind
Andrea McGant ('06) for third.
The service game played a major factor as UMBC served 12 aces and the Eagles also committed seven service errors. The Retrievers also hit a whopping .432 over the final two sets, including seven kills on seven swings in the deciding set.
The Eagles will fly South for a pair of MEAC matches, starting with South Carolina State at 6 pm on Friday, October 31. Two days later, Coppin will head to Durham, N.C., to play NC Central in a 1 pm start on ESPN+.
