NORFOLK, Va. – Cherisse Atilano recorded a match-high 17 kills and 17 digs, leading Coppin State's volleyball team to its tenth-straight victory in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-21) win at Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon at Gill Gymnasium. The Eagles are now 16-9 overall and a perfect 9-0 in the MEAC while matching a school-record for consecutive victories.
A freshman from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, Atilano hit .342 for the match, making just four errors on 38 swings to go with a match-high four aces to total 21.0 total points. Atilano's four aces matched a season-high while her kills and digs total were her third and second-most of the season, respectively.
TaKenya Stafford added 11 kills on .233 hitting to go with eight digs, followed by
Ahzhi Coleman and
Ivanna Luna with four kills apiece. Luna led the Eagles with three blocks while Coleman and
McKenzie Parks had two blocks apiece.
All three of Coppin's setters saw time quarterbacking the offense with
Andrea Serrano leading the way with 17 assists and seven digs.
Andrea Cintron added nine assists but played a big factor with four aces while
Azul Pilahg chipped in seven assists in just two sets. The trio held Coppin hit .226 compared to just .072 for the Spartans.
At libero,
Beatriz Cornachini saw her most playing time and was credited with six digs with three assists.
Aya Rawlins added four digs, an ace and two assists.
The match featured a whopping 28 ties and 16 lead changes.
Coppin returns to action on Wednesday, October 29 when it hosts UMBC in a 5 pm start.
