NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's
Cherisse Atilano repeated as the MEAC Volleyball Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. This is the second time this season that Atilano has received the honor from the conference office.
A freshman from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, Atilano posted a double-double 16 kills on .419 hitting, to go with 13 digs in the Eagles' 3-1 victory at second-place Morgan State last Friday.
Arguably the top freshman in the conference this season, Atilano ranks fifth in the MEAC in total kills (226), seventh in kills/set (2.66) and points/set (3.09) and tenth in digs/set (2.41). She's been even better in conference play, sitting fourth in the MEAC in hitting percentage (.324), and seventh in both kills/set (2.85) and digs/set (2.92), and eighth in points/set (3.31).
Atilano has gone over double-digit kills in eight matches this season, including a season-high 26 kills and 19 digs at North Carolina A&T, and a 21-kill performance against Liberty. She also has 26 service aces and six double-doubles on the season which both rank second on the Eagles.
The Eagles (13-9, 7-0 MEAC) have won seven-straight matches to open MEAC play and welcome NJIT for a non-conference tilt on October 21 before hosting second-place Howard two nights later.
