NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's Laila Lawrence has been named the MEAC Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon. This is the sixth time this season that Lawrence has received the award, which leads the conference.
A junior from Lewisville, Texas, Lawrence averaged 9.5 rebounds, 5.5 steals and 2.0 blocks last week as the Eagles split a pair of conference games. Lawrence opened with 11 rebounds to go with three blocks and four steals against NC Central before tallying another eight rebounds, a career-high seven steals and a block in a win over South Carolina State.
Lawrence leads the MEAC with 14 double-doubles and 10.4 rebounds while ranking third in scoring (13.5), field goal percentage (45.4), total blocks (31) and blocks per game (1.1), fourth in steals per game (1.8) and fifth in total steals (49). She's also taken a league-high 149 free throw attempts.
Nationally, Lawrence ranks ninth with 4.4 offensive rebounds per game, 21st in rebounds per game, 24th in double-doubles and 30th in total rebounds.
The Eagles close out regular season with a 5:30 pm tipoff on Thursday, March 7 at crosstown rival Morgan State.
