NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's
Laila Lawrence once again was named the MEAC Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon. This is the fourth time this season, and the second-straight week that Lawrence received the award.
Lawrence averaged a double-double, 16.5 points and 15.0 rebounds last week along with three steals and three assists. A junior from Lewisville, Texas, Lawrence put up 22 points and a season-high 16 rebounds on Saturday at NC Central before tallying 11 points and 14 rebounds with three steals in a victory at South Carolina State. Lawrence also went over the 1,000 career points mark in the victory against the Bulldogs.
For the season, Lawrence leads the MEAC with ten double-doubles while ranking second in scoring (14.3) and rebounds (9.1), third in field goal percentage (47.7) and blocks (23) and tied for seventh in steals (32). In conference games, Lawrence leads the league in rebounds (10.6) while sitting second in scoring (15.9), third in field goal percentage (50.0), blocks (8) and sixth in steals (13).
Nationally, Lawrence ranks 25
th in double-doubles, 30
th in offensive rebounds and 49
th in rebounds per game.
The Eagles (8-13, 5-2 MEAC) are currently tied for second in the MEAC through the first half of the conference schedule. Coppin returns to action on Saturday, February 17 when it hosts Delaware State in a 2:00 pm tipoff on ESPN+.
