Battle Scores Career-High 18 Points; Men’s Hoops Falls at South Carolina State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Malik Battle scored a career-high 18 points while Ryan Archey and Justin Winston also went for double figures as Coppin State's men's basketball team fell at South Carolina State, 77-65 on Monday night at S-H-M Memorial Center.  The Eagles fell to 2-19 and 1-6 in the MEAC while the Bulldogs moved to 8-15 on the year and 4-3 in league play.
 
Battle hit five 3-pointers and added 3-of-4 from the line to record a new career-high.  A redshirt senior from Atlanta, Ga., Battle went for 16 points at Mount St. Mary's earlier this season.
 
Archey put up 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting along with three assists and three steals while Winston tallied 15 points, a game-high seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.
 
Isaiah Gross also chipped in with seven points while the rest of the Eagles combined for eight points. Luka Tekavcic added three points, two rebounds and two assists in 11 minutes.
 
Coppin was outshot, 45.8% to 40.7% as the Bulldogs made 24-of-31 free throws and outrebounded the Eagles, 43-21. The Eagles matched a season-high with 13 assists on 22 baskets and eight 3-pointers.
 
How it Happened
  • South Carolina State opened on a 9-2 run with a jumper by Archey getting Coppin on the board just under two minutes into the game.
  • The Bulldogs made a series of runs and extended their lead to as many as 45-24 at the half following a pair of free throws in the final minute.
  • Following a 6-0 run by South Carolina State, all coming at the line, the Bulldogs matched their largest lead of the game at 61-38.
  • The final stretch was all Coppin as they made a last-ditch rally, starting with back-to-back buckets by Gross and Greg Spurlock.
  • SC State answered with a three which was followed by the first of four made 3-pointers in the second half by Battle.
  • After three more triples were traded, Coppin continued to crawl back into the game and pulled to within ten points in the final minute.
