Battle Leads With 17 Points in a Loss to Delaware State

BALTIMORE, MD.- Despite a first half lead and a 17 point performance from Malik Battle accompanied by balanced attack from the Eagles, Coppin State Men's Basketball team fell short to Delaware State on Saturday afternoon at home with a final score of 66-56. Coppin is now 1-7 in conference play while Delaware State advances to a record of 4-4.  

  
 Inside the Numbers 

  • Battle finished with 17 points and shot five of nine from the field to lead the team in scoring for the second week in a row.  

  • Four-time MEAC Rookie of the Week Ryan Archey scored nine points and matched a team high with two steals.  

  • Justin Winston also had nine points and was second on the team with seven rebounds.  

  • Camaren Sparrow lead all players with eight rebounds matched with eight points. 

  • Greg Spurlock tallied eight points, five rebounds and two assists. 

  • Darryon Prescott lead the team with two blocks and matched Spurlock to lead the team with two assists while chipping in two points and two rebounds.  

  • Luka Tekavcic contributed three points and knocked down his free-throw off an and one lay-up. 

  • Aa'Reyon Munir-Jones matched Archey with two steals to lead all players, added with two points, two rebounds and an assist. 

  • As a team, Coppin outnumbered Delaware State from the stripe and bench points (22-18).  

How it Happened 

  • Coppin led throughout most of the first half. 

  • Battle hit two threes and a jumper to put the Eagles on an 8-0 run.  

  • Sparrow hit a pair of threes off consecutive possessions and finished the half with eight points.  

  • Winston and Archey went on a final run 6-0 at the end of the first half to lead 35-30.  

  • The teams tied at 42 in the second half before the Hornets went on a 10-1 run. 

  • Archey and Battle took trips to the line to deflate the Hornets run. 

  • Tekavcic made an and one lay-up to cut the Hornets lead to double digits (57-49).  

  • Battle went on a final 5-0 stretch in the last two minutes before Delaware State ended up pulling a 66-56 victory. 

Up Next:Coppin State men's basketball will head to University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday, February 21st for the teams' second meeting in conference play.
