NORFOLK , Va. – Coppin State's
Laila Lawrence has been named the MEAC Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon. This is the third-straight time that Lawrence has received the award, and a league-leading fifth time this season.
A junior from Lewisville, Texas, Lawrence averaged a double-double of 13.0 points and 17.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocks over two games for the Eagles. In the win against Delaware State, she recorded 25 rebounds, an NCAA season-high, and 16 points along with three steals, one assist and one block. She followed with her 12
th double-double of the season at Maryland Eastern Shore, scoring ten points and ten rebounds with two blocks and one steal.
Lawrence leads the MEAC with 9.9 rebounds per game while ranking second in scoring (14.2), third in field goal percentage (46.7) and blocks (26) and sixth in steals (36). In conference games, Lawrence ranks first in rebounds (12.1), third in scoring (15.2) and blocks (11), fourth in steals (17) and sixth in field goal percentage (46.5).
The Eagles (9-14, 6-3 MEAC) are tied for second place in the MEAC and host league-leading Norfolk State for Homecoming at 2 pm on Saturday, February 24 on ESPN+.
