Winston Scores 28 Points in Men’s Hoops’ Loss at Maryland Eastern Shore

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Despite a game-high 28 points from Justin Winston and a 51 percent field goal percentage, Coppin State's men's basketball team fell at Maryland Eastern Shore, 75-67 on Monday night at the Hytche Center.  The Eagles fell to 2-21 overall and 1-8 in the MEAC while UMES moved to 8-15 on the year and 3-6 in league play.
 
Winston led all scorers with 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting while hitting a pair of 3-pointers and 4-of-5 from the line.  Winston also led the Eagles with six rebounds.
 
Khali Horton was also in double figures with 14 points with four 3-pointers, as was Aa'Reyon Munir-Jones with ten points, four rebounds and four steals.  Ryan Archey chipped in with six points, followed by Greg Spurlock with four, Malik Battle with three and Isaiah Gross with two.
 
UMES benefitted from hitting 22-of-28 from the line compared to 10-of-13 for the Eagles.
 
How it Happened
  • Winston helped Coppin get out to an early advantage, scoring ten of the team's first 14 points as the Eagles led, 14-9 at the 11:34 mark.
  • UMES stayed close and retook the lead at 22-21 before going on a run to extend its advantage to as many as 39-30 with just under a minute left.
  • Horton hit a three on the ensuing possession off a pass from Battle and the Hawks missed just before the buzzer following a timeout.
  • Winston opened the second half with a three to get the Navy & Gold to within three, but Coppin got no closer the rest of the way.
  • The Hawks led by as many as 63-49 following a 14-4 run over a five-minute stretch.
Up Next: Coppin returns to action for Homecoming on Saturday, February 24 when league-leading Norfolk State visits West Baltimore for a 4 pm tipoff.
