NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's
Laila Lawrence has been named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. This is the fourth time this season that Lawrence earned Defensive Player honors and the sixth overall award from the MEAC this season.
A senior from Lewisville, Texas, Lawrence posted a pair of double-doubles while averaging 21.5 points, 14.5 rebounds, 4.5 steals, 3.0 assists and 1.5 blocks. Lawrence shot 15-of-28 (53.6%) from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers and made 11-of-12 (91.7%) from the charity stripe.
Lawrence opened the FDU Christmas Tournament with 16 points and a season-high 19 rebounds in a win over Bryant. She added three assists and three steals in the victory. The following day, she scored a season-high 27 points on 11-of-12 free throws while grabbing ten rebounds, six steals, three assists and three blocks.
For the season, Lawrence leads the MEAC in points (18.2), rebounds (10.1) and double-doubles (11) while ranking second in both blocks (20) and steals (42) and fifth in assists (44). Lawrence ranks second nationally in double-doubles and is the only player in NCAA Division I to average 15 points, nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block per game.
