Men’s Hoops Puts Together Scrappy Effort in Hard Fought Loss at NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. – Four Eagles scored in double figures as a scrappy Coppin State men's basketball team fell at North Carolina State, 66-56, on Tuesday night at Reynolds Coliseum. The loss dropped Coppin to 0-11 as the Wolfpack improved to 7-3.

  • Peter Oduro scored a team-high 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting to go with five rebounds while Jonathan Dunn, Julius Ellerbe III and Toby Nnadozie scored ten points apiece.
  • Nnadozie led the Eagles with seven rebounds and added three steals as well.
  • Camaren Sparrow tallied eight points, followed by Zahree Harrison with five and Cam'Ron Brown with two.
  • Harrison matched Nnadozie with three steals while Brown dished out three assists.
  • Coppin outshot NC State, 43.2% to 36.7% and matched the Wolfpack with 16 free throws, but NC State buried four more 3-pointers and scored 17 points off turnovers.
  • The 36.7% shooting percentage was Coppin's best defensive effort of the season and the ten-point margin of defeat was the lowest for the Eagles this season.
How it Happened
  • Coppin got out to a great start, scoring the game's first six points on buckets from Sparrow, Brown and Oduro.
  • NC State got on the board with a free throw at the 15:42 mark, before Coppin extended its lead to as many as 17-8 with 12:06 left on a thunderous slam from Dunn.
  • The Wolfpack scored the next seven points, cutting Coppin's lead to two before Ellerbe increased the advantage with a layup at the halfway point of the period.
  • Another 7-0 run by NC State gave them its first lead of the game at 23-21 before Nnadozie tied the score with a layup on the ensuing possession.
  • The hosts regained the lead with a three and hit another triple just before the buzzer to go into the half with a 35-28 lead.
  • Oduro started the second half with three early points to get the Eagles back within 35-31.
  • NC State looked to pull away numerous times, extending the margin to as many as 66-50, but Coppin kept counterpunching to stay in the game.
