Men’s Hoops Drops Home Opener to Rider Despite 18 Points From Nnadozie, Ward

BALTIMORE – Toby Nnadozie and Derrius Ward scored 18 points apiece as the Coppin State men's basketball team fell to Rider, 64-53, in its home opener on Saturday afternoon at PEC Arena.  The Eagles fell to 0-3 on the year while the Broncs now stand at 2-1.

Inside the Numbers
  • Nnadozie's 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting were a season-high as he buried four 3-pointers along with three rebounds, an assist and two steals.
  • Ward hit 7-of-17 shots from the field while going 4-of-8 from the line. He added six rebounds, an assist and a block.
  • The rest of the Eagles combined for just 17 points with Khali Horton recording seven, followed by Jonathan Dunn with four points and a team-high eight rebounds.
  • Cam'Ron Brown, Peter Oduro and Camaren Sparrow all had two points each.
  • Brown dished out three assists with Dunn, Oduro and Horton added two dimes apiece.
  • Rider outshot Coppin, 44.7% to 34.4% and held a 41-32 advantage on the glass against a much smaller Eagles roster.
How it Happened
  • Oduro gave Coppin the 2-0 lead with the first bucket of the game, but Rider scored the next seven points, holding the Eagles scoreless until a layup by Ward at the 15:02 mark.
  • The Broncs built up a 20-11 lead which Coppin brought to within 23-22 as Nnadozie scored seven points during the stretch.
  • Four-straight points by Rider extended the lead back to five but Ward and Nnadozie added buckets just before the half, keeping the deficit well within reach at 31-27.
  • Horton had a pair of layups to start the second half, tying the score at 31, but Rider answered with a 14-1 run, holding Coppin without a field goal for 6:30.
  • A layup by Ward in transition ended the drought and made it a 45-35 deficit but the Eagles were unable to get within eight points of the visitors.
Up Next: Coppin will have another short turnaround as it makes the trip to Charlottesville to play Virginia on Monday, November 11 at 7 pm.  The matchup will air on ACCNX along with an audio stream on www.baltimorepositive.com
