Ward, Dunn Reach Double Figures as Men’s Hoops Falls at Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Derrius Ward and Jonathan Dunn both scored in double figures as the Coppin State men's basketball team fell at University of Virginia, 62-45, on Monday night at John Paul Jones Arena.  The Eagles fell to 0-4 on the season as the Cavaliers improved to 2-0.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Ward scored a team-high 12 points and just missed out on a double-double with nine rebounds.  He hit 3-of-7 from the floor with two 3-pointers and 4-of-5 from the line while adding an assist and two steals.
  • Dunn made 5-of-11 from the field for a career-high 11 points to go with two rebounds and a block.
  • Cam'Ron Brown scored a season-high eight points, hitting all four of his free throws, and grabbed four rebounds.
  • Peter Oduro and Zahree Harrison scored five points apiece, followed by Khali Horton with four points, seven rebounds and two assists.
  • Toby Nnadozie was credited with a career-high five steals and led the Eagles with three assists as well.
  • Virginia, who had four players in double figures, outshot Coppin, 40.4% to 28.0% and outrebounded the Eagles, 39-30.
How it Happened
  • Brown hit a midrange jumper in the paint on Coppin's first possession, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead before the Cavaliers scored the next six points.
  • After falling behind 18-10, Coppin got a pair of buckets from Dunn, including a dunk to keep the Eagles in it at 20-14 with 4:33 left in the half.
  • Virginia responded with three quick 3-pointers, extending its advantage to 29-14 in just under two minutes.
  • Dunn stopped the bleeding with another layup but the Cavaliers hit another three less than a minute later and went into the half with a 32-16 lead.
  • With just over six minutes left in regulation, Virginia built its largest lead at 57-29 on a breakaway dunk.
  • Oduro answered with a three, and after forcing a turnover, Nnadozie fed Ward for an alley-oop in transition.
  • Ward then hit two free throws before the Cavaliers ended their drought with a three at the 3:47 mark.
  • In the final 90 seconds, Brown and Dunn combined for three free throws, Ward hit a long three and hit the freebie for a four-point play, and Dunn hit another transition layup in the closing seconds.
