CATONSVILLE, Md. – Jonathan Dunn recorded a career-high 22 points, but the Coppin State men's basketball team fell at UMBC, 92-67, on Thursday night at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena. The Eagles fell to 0-5 on the season as the Retrievers moved to 3-1.
Inside the Numbers
- Dunn hit 9-of-13 from the floor to lead all scorers while grabbing six rebounds.
- Julius Ellerbe also matched a career-high with 15 points, making 5-of-6 from the floor, including a three, and 4-of-5 from the line.
- Cam'Ron Brown was also in double figures with a season-high 11 points to go with four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
- Camaren Sparrow had his best game of the season with seven points while leading the team with seven rebounds and matched both Brown and Toby Nnadozie (six points) with a pair of steals apiece.
- The Eagles had their best shooting performance of the season, hitting 47.3% from the floor, but allowed UMBC to shoot 58.6% from the field and 10-of-19 (52.6%) from deep.
- Four UMBC players scored in double figures, led by Bryce Johnson with 18 points.
How it Happened
- UMBC hit a three just seconds into the game to take an early lead, but Coppin responded well with a pair of free throws by Brown and back-to-back layups by Dunn to take a 6-5 lead at the first media timeout.
- The Retrievers scored five quick points out of the timeout to go up 10-6, which was cut in half to 10-8 on a baseline jumper by Ward at the 13:54 mark.
- UMBC answered the bucket with a 21-6 run over the next 7:30 and maintained the lead through the rest of the half.
- Coppin cut the deficit in the second half to as little as 51-39 with 16:12 remaining after back-to-back threes from Sparrow and Brown along with a layup by Dunn, but the Retrievers extended their advantage to as many as 25 at the final horn.
