Bowling Takes 5th at Virginia Union Invitational; Davis 6th in Individual Standings

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – Led by sophomore Victoria Davis, the Coppin State bowling team finished fifth at the Virginia Union Invitational over the weekend at Bowl America Southwest.
 
A sophomore from New Milford, Conn., Davis finished sixth overall, just four pins off the All-Tournament Team, totaling 906 pins in five traditional matches to average 181.2 per game. Davis accumulated a 78.0 overall fill percentage in traditional style, averaging 8.36 on her first ball to go with 17 strikes and converting on 66.7% of her spares.
 
Blessing Lawrence followed with 17.18 pins per game, accumulating 859 pins for a 171.8 average. Lawrence matched Davis with 17 strikes and converted on a team-best 79.2 percent of makeable spares.
 
During Baker play, freshman Shenae Harrison averaged a team-high 17.30 pins with a 79.8 overall fill percentage and 30 strikes. She also led the team by converting 68.5 percent of spares and 72.0 percent of makeable spares.
 
Coppin went 3-2 in Baker style matches on Friday, recording victories over Norfolk State (855-717) to open the weekend and closing the day out with wins over Virginia State (830-586) and Virginia Union (759-656). The Eagles fell to Fayetteville State (932-793) and Alabama A&M (799-704).
 
On Saturday, the Eagles split four traditional matches, getting revenge on both Fayetteville State (815-790) and Alabama A&M (963-846) at the tail-end. Coppin fell to Howard, 817-747 to start traditional matches, along with a 915-798 loss to Norfolk State.
 
Lawrence led Coppin with a 183 in the opener against the Bison before the Eagles totaled a 744 in a Bye.  Davis regrouped with a 194 against Norfolk State and she followed up with a 192 against Fayetteville State and a 210 vs. Alabama A&M. She was one of three Eagles to recorded over a 200 against the Bulldogs with Lawrence rolling a 212, and Shakyia Johnson a 203. Abigail Brockington had her best match against A&M as well, rolling a 173.
 
To wrap up the tournament, Coppin fell to Norfolk State, 4-2, and Howard, 4-1, before closing out with a 4-2 win over Virginia Union.
 
Coppin returns to the lanes on November 9-10 for MEAC Meet #1, held at Triad Lanes in Greensboro, N.C.
