BALTIMORE – Greg Spurlock recorded 17 points and 12 rebounds, both career highs, to lead Coppin State's men's basketball team to a 58-55 overtime victory over Maryland Eastern Shore in a MEAC matchup on Monday night at PEC Arena. The Eagles improved to 2-14 overall and even their record at 1-1 in the MEAC while the Hawks fell 4-10 with an identical 1-1 mark in league play.
Spurlock made 6-of-16 shots from the floor with three 3-pointers in the first double-double of his career.
Toto Fagbenle and
Ryan Archey added ten points apiece with Fagbenle blocking a career-high four shots.
Aa'Reyon Munir-Jones added seven points and a season-high 13 rebounds, followed by
Luka Tekavcic with four points, six rebounds, three assists and a pair of blocks.
Camaren Sparrow and
Preist Ryan chipped in three points apiece while
Darryon Prescott and
Don Don Ferguson also hit field goals.
Coppin outshot UMES, 35.9% to 25.0% and held a 51-50 advantage on the glass. The eagles made just 6-of-18 free throws compared to 15-of-19 for the Hawks.
How it Happened
- UMES got out strong to a 17-7 lead at the 11:15 mark of the first half before Coppin got on track with a 11-1 run to tie the score at 18 with 6:58 left.
- Five different players scored during the run with Spurlock tying the score with a three off a pass from Tekavcic.
- The teams traded buckets the rest of the period and the Hawks led, 23-21 at the half.
- Coppin went on an 11-2 run early in the second half with Archey tallying five during the stretch and CSU held its largest lead of 36-27 on a layup by Tekavcic with 10:06 left.
- The Eagles then went cold and UMES retook the lead at 39-37 with just over three minutes left in regulation.
- Spurlock tied the score at 39 with 1:43 to play and he put the eagles on top, 42-41 with a three with just under a minute to go.
- UMES scored at the other end and hit a pair of free throws to go up, 45-42.
- Archey drained a three from the right wing as time expired to send the game into overtime which saw the Eagles score the first eight points on threes by Sparrow and Spurlock before a posterizing slam by Munir-Jones with 2:56 to play.
- The Hawks did not go away, scoring the next seven points, but a layup by Fagbenle made it a three-point game with 40 ticks remaining.
- Following a miss by the Hawks, Archey hit a pair of free throws with 16 seconds remaining to seal the win.
