Men’s Hoops Falls in Overtime Despite Game-High 26 Points from Ryan Archey

BALTIMORE – A game-high 26 points from freshman Ryan Archey was not enough as the Coppin State men's basketball team dropped an 89-86 overtime heartbreaker against Morgan State on Saturday afternoon at PEC Arena. The Eagles fell to 2-15 while the Bears moved to 5-14 and both teams are now 1-2 in the MEAC.
 
Archey hit 8-of-11 from the floor and 9-of-15 from the line to easily exceed his season high. Classmate Aa'Reyon Munir-Jones added 15 points while making all six of his shots from the stripe while junior Greg Spurlock and freshman Camaren Sparrow also reached double digits with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Spurlock also led the Eagles with eight rebounds and four steals.
 
Toto Fagbenle finished with nine points, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals and Luka Tekavcic made 4-of-5 shots for eight points.
 
Coppin outshot Morgan, 50% to 45% and both teams went to the line very often with the Bears making 32-of-36 (88.9%) compared to 30-of-40 (75.0%) for the Eagles. CSU held a slim, 31-30 advantage on the glass.
 
Morgan got 24 points apiece from Allen Udemadu and Wynston Tabbs along with 17 points from Will Thomas.
 
How it Happened
  • Coppin took control of the game early on, going on a 16-6 run midway through the first half to take a 28-18 lead with 7:42 remaining.
  • Sparrow went for five points during the run which was capped by with a three by Spurlock.
  • Spurlock hit another three after a pair of Morgan State free throws to give the Eagles their largest lead of the game at 31-20 with 5:01 left.
  • Morgan regrouped to close the half with 14 of the next 17 points to tie the score at 34 at intermission.
  • The Bears outscored Coppin, 27-12 over the first ten minutes of the second half to take a 61-46 advantage but the Eagles did not go away, employing a smaller, faster lineup for the rest of regulation.
  • Munir-Jones started a 14-2 run with a pair of free throws at the 4:46 mark, followed by a three-point play by Fagbenle, the former Morgan State Bear.
  • Archey scored the next four points, followed by two free throws by Spurlock and another jumper by Munir-Jones with 39 ticks remaining to close the deficit to 74-72.
  • Archey hit 1-of-2 free throws with five seconds left to make it a one-point game, and after a foul, Morgan State's Rob Lawson hit two from the stripe.
  • Sparrow took an inbounds pass, dribbled just inside half court and banked in a shot from the right side with 0.7 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.
  • Archey had five early points in overtime, giving the Eagles an 83-79 lead with 3:10 remaining, and he continued to be the go-to guy for much of the extra session.
  • Tabbs put MSU on top, 87-86 with 25 seconds left, and after a turnover, the Bears hit two more free throws to go up three with six seconds to go.
  • Following a timeout, Coppin's attempt to tie the score fell short.
Up Next: The Eagles return to action on Saturday, January 27 when they head to Norfolk State (12-5, 2-1 MEAC) for a 4 pm tipoff.
