NORFOLK, Va. – For the third time this season, Coppin State's
Laila Lawrence was named the MEAC Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday night.
A junior from Lewisville, Texas, Lawrence averaged 16.0 points with 9.0 rebounds along with 2.0 blocks and 1.5 steals in a pair of games for the Eagles last week. Lawrence opened the week with ten points and five rebounds at Norfolk State before going off for her MEAC-leading eighth double-double of the season in a victory Howard on Monday night. Against the Bison, Lawrence posted 22 points and 13 rebounds, including 11 defensive boards, four blocks and two steals.
Lawrence ranks second in the MEAC in scoring (14.1) and third in rebounds (8.5), field goal percentage (48.1), and blocks (23). In conference games, she ranks second in scoring (15.6), third in field goal percentage (52.6) and blocks (1.6), fourth in rebounds (8.8) and tied for sixth in steals (2.0).
Coppin is currently tied for first in the MEAC and travels to play N.C. Central (Feb. 3) and South Carolina State (Feb. 5) before hosting Delaware State on February 17.
