Ryan Archey Scores Game-High 20 Points as Men’s Hoops Falls to Howard

BALTIMORE – Ryan Archey scored a game-high 20 points as Coppin State's men's basketball team fell to Howard, 81-66 on Monday night at PEC Arena.  The Eagles fell to 2-17 overall and 1-4 in the MEAC while the Bison improved to 9-13 on the year and 3-3 in league play.
 
Archey made 7-of-15 shots from the floor, including a three, while also making 5-of-9 from the free throw line to lead all scorers. A freshman from Clinton, Md., Archey added four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
 
Justin Winston made his return to the lineup and recorded 12 points and three rebounds in just 14 minutes of action. Camaren Sparrow finished a rebound shy of a double-double along with 11 points.  Greg Spurlock chipped in eight points, followed by Khali Horton with six points and Darryon Prescott with four points and five rebounds.
 
Howard had five players in double figures and outshop Coppin, 45.6% to 34.5%.
 
How it Happened
  • Coppin got out to a quick 7-2 lead with a game-opening three by Sparrow, followed by a dunk from Prescott and a pair of free throws by Spurlock.
  • The Eagles held the lead or were tied until the Bison took its first advantage at 20-19 with 10:15 left.
  • After several lead changes, Howard regained the lead with 3:20 remaining in the period and took a 40-35 lead at the half.
  • Howard opened the second half with nine-straight points, which Coppin answered with a 5-0 run to pull within, 49-40 at the 15:00 mark.
  • A pair of Howard free throws put the Bison back on top by 11 and CSU was unable to get the deficit in single digits the rest of the way.
Up Next: Coppin will head South to face NC Central (Feb. 3) and South Carolina State (Feb. 5) for a pair of MEAC games before hosting Delaware State on February 17 in a 2 pm doubleheader.
