Archey, Horton Score 15 Points Each; Men’s Hoops Falls at Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman Ryan Archey tallied 15 points and classmate Khali Horton matched that total for a season-high as the Coppin State men's basketball team fell at Norfolk State, 68-58 on Saturday afternoon at Echols Hall.  The Eagles now stand at 2-16 overall and 1-3 in the MEAC while the Spartans improved to 13-8 and 3-1 in league play.

Archey made 5-of-15 from the floor with a pair of threes while adding four rebounds and three assists while Horton buried five threes on the day. Greg Spurlock chipped in with eight points, followed by Camaren Sparrow and Darryon Prescott with five points apiece.

Spurlock and Sparrow matched Archey's three assists while Prescott's six rebounds led the Eagles. Spurlock also had three steals.

Coppin hit a season-high ten 3-pointers but were outshot by Norfolk State, 47.8% to 36.2%, and witnessed a large discrepancy at the free throw line with the Spartans making 24-of-34 compared to just 6-of-13 for the Eagles.  For the first time in at least 15 years, Coppin did not allow it's opponent to hit a 3-point field goal.

Norfolk outrebounded Coppin, 43-27 and got 19 points from Chris Fields who made 7-of-9 from the line.

How it Happened
  • Neither team scored for the first three minutes before the Spartans got on the board first at the 16:54 mark.
  • Sparrow came right back with a go-ahead three on the ensuing possession, followed by another three by Spurlock which was Coppin's largest lead of the game.
  • The Spartans built a six-point lead at the half and got a dunk early in the second half to go up, 34-26 with 19:23 left in regulation.
  • Trailing, 44-37 with 13:20 left, Coppin scored nine-straight points to go back on top.  Archey was fouled shooting a three and knocked down all three free throws. After a turnover, he also buried a three and Horton drained another to give CSU a 46-44 lead with 10:35 remaining.
  • Norfolk broke a tie at 48 with a layup at the 7:40 mark, outscoring Coppin, 18-8 the rest of the way, making six free throws in the closing minutes.
