NORFOLK, Va. - A trio of Coppin State volleyball players earned MEAC weekly awards on Monday afternoon after leading the Eagles to a 3-0 record at the Marshall Invitational last weekend.
Ammaarah Williams was named Player of the Week while
Andrea Tsvetanova was selected as the Setter of the Week and
Ashley Roman received Defensive Player of the Week honors.
This is the fourth time of her career, and the second while in a Coppin uniform that Williams received the MEAC Player of the Week award. Tsvetanova is now an 11-time MEAC Setter of the Week while Roman picked up the 15
th MEAC weekly award of her career.
Williams led all players in kills in all three matches over the weekend, recording double-doubles against UNC Greensboro (17 kills, 14 digs) and Marshall (13 kills, 14 digs). The outside hitter averaged 3.83 kills and 3.08 digs while hitting .250. Williams was a dig shy of a double-double against Morehead State, finishing with 16 kills on .343 hitting along with nine digs. A graduate student from Cleveland, Ohio, Williams also had three blocks against MSU and a pair of blocks and aces against the Spartans.
Tsvetanova averaged 9.4 assists per set in Coppin's perfect weekend at Marshall, twice eclipsing the 40-assist mark. A redshirt senior from Sofia, Bulgaria, Tsvetanova's weekend high of 45 assists came against Marshall – a match in which she also recorded 10 digs for a double-double – and she had 43 assists in the opener against UNC Greensboro. Each match also saw Tsvetanova record at least two service aces, and she had a season-high five against Morehead State.
A redshirt senior from Isabela, P.R., Roman averaged 5.17 digs per set while adding 12 assists and a pair of aces in three wins. Roman opened the weekend with a season-high 27 digs along with an assist and an ace in a four-set win over the Spartans before coming right back with a match-high ten digs with six assists in a sweep of Morehead State. She closed the tournament with 25 digs and five assists in Coppin's comeback win over Marshall.
Both Williams and Roman also received Marshall Invitational All-Tournament Team awards.
The Eagles (5-1) are off to their best start in program history and return to action on Tuesday, September 5 at Loyola Maryland for a 6 pm start.
